A short-sighted golfer is about to put off the green and into a bomb crater, as his playing partner looks on with concern. W Lindsay Cable was a famous children's illustrator, predominantly working in the 1940's for famous publishers such as Blackie and Son, Wells, Gardner, Darton & Co, and working for Punch magazine for several years. He was an accomplished artist. Cable illustrated all of Enid Blyton's St Clares series as well as The Naughtiest Girl in the School and The Secret of Cliff Castle. He also illustrated several books by Rita Coatts including Ghosts at Stark Hall, The Ghost at Beeches, Jane Sets Out, The Silent House and The House With Dark Corners. He illustrated a later version of Robinson Crusoe and Little Pilgrim's Progress by Helen L Taylor. A famous (and controversial) work by Cable was his portrayal of Ahmad and Johnny in the booklets of the same name, which were British propaganda pamphlets distributed in Egypt.

Pencil sketches, 14 of golf and one of cricket interest. Some partially overdrawn in pen and ink, most unfinished, some mere 'doodles'. Presented in original small folio. Sheets of varying sizes, smallest 98 x 162mm, largest c.203 x 255mm. Folio spine broken.
Light-hearted anecdotes on a links golf course, probably Monifieth or Carnoustie in Angus on the east coast of Scotland. The amateur artist is John James Dalyell [c.1835 - c.1900?], who was brought up in Carnoustie, home of the world renowned 'Championship' course created in 1850, and which plays host in July 2007 to golf's oldest and most prestigious championship, The Open. He was a keen sportsman, being a member of the Angus and Mearns Rifle Association, the Caledonian Union, Dalhousie, and Monifieth Golf Clubs. He was Captain and later Honorary Secretary of the Caledonian Union Golf Club, Carnoustie, for whom he was an enthusiastic advocate and promoter. Dalyell tried his hand at authorship, and a number of his stories survive mainly in draft copy. They are generally humorous accounts of sporting excursions. He was also a member of Dundee Cricket Club. One sketch with 'D'L' artist's monogram, two captioned faintly in pencil by the artist. These sketches must have been drawn before 1873, when the artist unfortunately suffered a breakdown and was committed to an asylum for the rest of his life.

Eight manuscript plans on linen in different combinations of pencil, black and red ink and watercolour. Sheets varying sizes, smallest c.190 x 300mm, largest c.370 x 690mm Folds, staining as normal.
Earl Eldon of Encombe, Dorset. At the end of the 19th century, Mr. Wyatt, an Englishman, arrived at Menaggio on Lake Como, northern Italy, and settled in nearby Croce. He and his English neighbour Mr. Mylius decided to build a course at Dervio on the opposite side of the lake. The location was not ideal however, and a hilly area in Grandola ed Uniti near Menaggio became the site of the 'Golf Club Menaggio and Cadenabbia' when the official decision was taken to start a golf club during a meeting held at the Hotel Victoria in Menaggio. The Italian Golf Federation defines 1906 as the year of the club's affiliation. These plans date from a few years later and perhaps show the early stages of the development of a clubhouse for the newly-established course. All captioned 'Lake Como Golf Club Dervio' along with an identification of the particular elevation or plan, some are numbered. One shows a finished elevation, the lower part of the pencil drawing completed in watercolour (a golfer carrying a club is visible to the right).

This portrait of John Taylor ( fl. 1807 - 1825) and his caddy is one of the greatest golfing images. It shows Taylor, in his red captain's jacket, about to tee off on the original course of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers on Leith Links, two miles north-east of the city centre. In 1744 this group (then known as 'the gentlemen golfers') had drawn up the first official rules for a tournament which were to form the basis for the modern game of golf. The club moved to Musselburgh in 1836 and further down the coast to Muirfield at the end of the nineteenth century. This is from an impressive oil painting by Sir John Watson Gordon (1788 - 1864) in the National Galleries of Scotland. Gordon was training to become an army engineer when, encouraged by his uncle, the painter, George Watson, and Raeburn, who was a family friend, he decided to become an artist. His first works were subject pictures but, after Raeburn's death in 1823, he established himself as the leading portrait painter in Scotland. His style was at first closely based on Raeburn but was later more influenced by his admiration for Velázquez. After Raeburn's death in 1823, Watson Gordon became Scotland's leading portrait painter.
